Chairman Report – Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2021

sonja031

Dear Selby Fell Walking Club (SFWC) Members,

Given the current situation and Selby being in a National Lockdown due to COVID-19, this year’s AGM which should have been held on Thursday 14th January 2021 at Drax Sports and Social Club has been cancelled.

I hope my report finds you all well and healthy, if like me I bet you are glad to see the back of 2020. That year will be remembered for many reasons, you will all have your own stories, probably some sad ones which you want to forget, but hopefully sometime this year will see the club get back into the hills once again with some of our club walks.

I have not been informed of any former or current club members passing away.

When I took over as your Chairman in January 2020, sadly my first decision was to cancel the February walk due to Storm Dennis.

8th March 2020 – this walk was scheduled to go ahead in February 2020. The walks where a circular from Osmotherly, the long walk was led by Neil Foster & John Bell, the medium walk was led by Karen Bell (not sure if this was Karen’s first walk as a leader) & Elizabeth Dear and the steady walk was led by Katy Duggan, unfortunately this would-be Katy’s last time leading the steady walks for the club.

Due to the Government National Lockdown, the walks for April, May, June, July and the Weekend away in May to Reeth were cancelled.

The club were able to start walking again in August, but due to restrictions on coach numbers the decision was to walk locally and use your own cars. Due to Katy Duggan no longer walking with the club, we went back to just a long and short walk.

9th August 2020 – both walks were a circular from Market Weighton, the long walk led by Steve Howard & Neal Porter, the short one was led by Sonja Allen & Irene Brereton, this was Sonja’s first walk as a leader for the club.

13th September 2020 – both walks were a circular from Stamford Bridge, the long one was led by Steve Howard, the short one was led by first time walk leaders Julie Simpson & Michelle Wybrant.

11th October 2020 – both walks where a circular from Elsecar Heritage Centre, the long one was led by David Shilladay, the short one was led by Brian Rogerson & Elizabeth Dear.

November 2020 - the walk was cancelled due to National Lockdown.

13th December 2020 – our Christmas walk was scheduled to take place at Snainton, near Pickering and have our Christmas Lunch at the Coachman Inn, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions the meal was cancelled, a walk from Selby taking in parts of Burn Airfield and the Selby Horseshoe was led by Steve Howard.

10th January 2021 – due to the restrictions and not knowing what tier Selby would be in, it was decided by the committee the walks would be a circular from Selby, however due to the National Lockdown the walk was cancelled.

The club was able to get away to the Lake District on the weekend of 18th to 20th September 2020 and the members stayed at Glaramara, near Seatoller, on the Friday a circular walk from Dufton via High Cup Nick was led by Steve Howard. On the Saturday, a few walks took place, the main walk was a circular walk led by Carol & Alan Abdy from the village of Grasmere. John Bell led a walk and further walk was led by Tim Darley. On the Sunday, a circular walk at Whinlatter Forest Park was led by Steve Howard and Tim Darley led a walk from Dufton.

This year we plan to try and visit Reeth for a weekend away in May and our annual weekend visit to the Lake District is booked for the 17th to 19th September 2021.

We are always looking for walk leaders/deputies so if you are interested then please contact a member of the committee, likewise if there is any walks or areas you would like to visit, this would be very much appreciated.

This is also my chance to thank all the walk leaders and their deputies over the last 12 months for their time and effort given by recceing and working out the routes for our various walks we have encountered in 2020 and early part of 2021. I know some walks where recced, but sadly had to be Cancelled.

The committee did manage to meet on a few occasions after lockdown, the last 2 been Zoom meetings. Everyone on the committee are happy to carry on less Katy Duggan who resigned in the summer and will no longer be walking with the club. I did send an email thanking her for all her hard work over her many years while been on the committee and for leading the steady walks, I am sure the members will miss her, but if you walk along the cycle path from Selby to York, I am sure you meet her, like I did a few weeks ago.

The club finances are healthy and have been audited.

Any member who paid their 2020 membership subscription, this will be carried over into 2021 and you will not need to pay until 2022.

The next few walks had been arranged for:

14th February 2021 – Drax

14th March 2021 – Castle Howard or Nunnington

11th April 2021 – Knaresborough

Once again due to the current National Lockdown all walks have been suspended, until further notice. Please see Ramblers update:
