Seaside and Puffins - by Sonja Allen
Lovely sunny weather awaited us again for our walks around Flamborough.
The medium walk (8 miles) left the centre of Flamborough and walked towards the church on through Beacon Farm and out to the coast at Beacon Hill. Turning north they walked along the coastal path until reaching the steps down to South Landing by the Lifeboat Station. They then took the steps back up to the coastal path along South Cliff until they reached Flamborough Head where they had lunch. There was an opportunity here for steady walkers to return to Flamborough if they wished. The group then continued along the coastal path heading to North Landing and onto Thornwick Bay before turning inland through the caravan park and back to Flamborough for refreshments.
The long walkers (12 miles) were dropped off near Bempton from where they took Cliff Lane out to the coast. At Bempton cliffs they could see some puffins and huge numbers of other seabirds such as razorbills and gannets. They continued along the coastal path towards North Landing and the lighthouse at Flamborough Head passing stunning rock formations, sea stacks and high stack sea arches made from the white cretaceous chalk rock. At Flamborough Head, the group continued on past Bridlington Cove and South Landing, descending to sea level at the RNLI Lifeboat station and then climbing again to the cliff top by way of steep steps heading towards Beacon Hill where they turned right and back into Flamborough.
