Eight members of the club spent a walking weekend from the 21st to 23rd May 2021, in the village of Reeth, Swaledale Yorkshire Dales, sadly the weather was not perfect, but everyone enjoyed the weekend away.
Steve Howard led the walks over the weekend starting with a double walk on the Friday.
Friday 21st May 2021, saw two other members joining Steve on the 7-mile circular walk from Reeth, which passed the Marrick Priory (Benedictine Nuns), we took the steps uphill in Steps Wood, water was pouring down these steps, from the village of Marrick we headed and joined Fremington Edge, then headed downhill passing the Whitehouse back into Reeth, the weather was wet to start with, but was changeable with a slight breeze.
The rest of the group turned up and the same walk was completed but the weather was completely different from the earlier walk, it was raining, very cold and windy along Fremington Edge, with more water underfoot along the Edge.
Saturday 22nd May 2021, we drove out to Muker, this was a 8-mile circular walk heading north for Keld, with a detour to the East Gill Force, the waterfalls where in full flow, due to the rain the previous day, we joined the Pennine Way where we went for a coffee and cake/scone at Kearton Country Hotel Tearooms in the village of Thwaite, we did have to wait awhile due to a group of cyclists from Darlington, the weather was cloudy, drier and turned a bit warmer later in the afternoon.
Sunday 23rd May 2021 was a 6-mile circular from Reeth, we headed north out of the village, where we saw storm damaged from the flash flooding of July 2019, along Arkle Beck. We headed for Grinton and followed the River Swale south of Reeth, crossing the river at the Swing Bridge, returning to Reeth we all went into The Copper Kettle Tearoom for a light lunch, the weather was dry and times we were able to walk without a jacket.
The members were accommodated in traditional 17th century pub, called The Black Bull, the staff where so helpful and friendly, the food was excellent, the group enjoyed their stay in Reeth, they were talking about staying again next year.
